Are you telling the truth about why you are in your current business or looking at a startup business?
“Passion is Good… Profitable Passion is best”
I don’t want this quote to be misinterpreted… I LOVE passions.
I have a passion for college football. I also LOVE Formula 1 racing. I call those my ‘surreal’ passions.
They don’t make me money. In fact, most of the time they cost me money.
Don’t get me wrong, they are CRITICALLY important for the enjoyment of life.
I also have passions that are profitable (aka my business). I truly have a passion business. When I get up in the morning, I don’t dread going ‘to work’.
I look forward to pursuing my passions through business. I love the ‘game’ of business and have a real passion for it.
I’m not saying you have to agree with this, but ask yourself… What’s better just HAVING a passion OR actually monetizing a passion?
I think the answer is obvious.
So, the question comes up though… What if you just want to start a business so that you can pursue other passions?
Aha… There it is… Why are you REALLY in business?
Is it because like me you REALLY enjoy the game of business? Or is it a means to an end?
You need to tell the truth about this.
You need to tell your business partners the truth about this.
You need to tell your spouse the truth about this.
If the ONLY reason you’re in business is to have a means to an end, I think long term you will struggle. Even worse, you will most likely create a job for yourself and end up hating it.
Really, you should just got get a job if that’s the case. Save your self the overhead, headache, etc.
I realize that might not be what you want to hear, but its tough to run a successful business when you REALLY don’t want to be there and want to be doing something else. You know, like your passion that the business is supposed to monetarily support.
If you don’t love what you do. If you don’t have a passion for helping people through your business, getting results and being in the ‘game’ of being an entrepreneur than I suggest you do one of three things.
- Just go get a job. Again, be honest about this. There’s nothing wrong with having a job. You’re not a failure if you get a job. You just told the truth about what you really wanted. You want a job that just provides a decent life for you and your family.
- If you have money, then just fund other businesses, go into real estate and earn passive cash flow, etc. Just go make your money make money so you don’t have to.
- Change businesses… Start a business that you love to work in, work on, work smart and work hard. It will be MASSIVELY rewarding for you.
You might disagree with me on all of this but seriously look at your business. Or look at the business you are thinking about starting.
If you don’t love the ‘game’ of it… Do yourself and everyone else around you a BIG favor and get out or don’t start it at all.
It’s okay. Truth always wins… Even if it means getting a job or massively changing your business.
